In Year 9, students are introduced to Business with an initial study of businesses in the local area with the aim of identifying and planning a new local business idea. Throughout the year, students cover a range of topics taken from the BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise and the GCSE Business programmes of studies, providing them with an understanding of a broad range of business activities. The main areas of focus are on business in the real world, with a number of topics supporting the learning, including: purpose and nature of business, business ownership, setting business aims and objectives, stakeholders, business location, business planning and expanding a business. There are lots of opportunities for students to take on business-related tasks, such as designing a new business idea and presenting it in front of the ‘dragons’.
In Years 10 and 11, students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of business by gaining either the BTEC TECH Award in Enterprise or the GCSE Business Studies qualification. Both courses provide exciting challenges where learners’ academic levels can be accommodated through the GCSE or vocational option. You need to be committed, enthusiastic and determined to meet all the deadlines, and confident to deliver speeches and pitches in front of people, whilst working extremely well with others.
Students may go on to study Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business or A-levels, providing he/she has high GCSE grades in this as well in other subjects. Future careers could be a business teacher; various roles within the business sector, banking, entrepreneurship and many others.
